Salzburg,
at an elevation of 425 m, the capital of the
province of the same name, is located at the
northern edge of the eastern Alps, almost in the
center of Austria. Due to its advantageous
geographic location at the intersection of old
European trade routes, it is easily accessible
from any direction by car, by rail and by plane.
The city has 145,000 inhabitants and is the seat
of countless worldly and spiritual authorities.
Salzburg owes its world renown to the
incomparably beautiful surroundings, the
enchantment of the city's architectural character
and the providence that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
was born here in 1756. Salzburg is not only the
City of Mozart but the raising of the
"Mozarteum" to the status of a
conservatory (1953) and later to an academy of
music (1971) as well as the re-opening (1962) of
the university dating from 1622 have caused
Salzburg to become a musical and collegiate city.
Last but not least Salzburg is known throughout
the world as a city of music festivals, health
spas and congresses. |
